http://csglobe.com/escobar-son-dad-worked-cia-cocaine/ FEB 22, 2017
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pablo_Escobar
Juan Pablo Escobar Henao, son of notorious Medellín cartel drug kingpin, Pablo Escobar, now says his father “worked for the CIA.”
In a new book, “Pablo Escobar In Fraganti,” Escobar, who lives under the pseudonym, Juan Sebastián Marroquín, explains his “father worked for the CIA selling cocaine to finance the fight against Communism in Central America.”
“The drug business is very different than what we dreamed,” he continues.
“What the CIA was doing was buying the controls to get the drug into their country and getting a wonderful deal.”
*“He did not make the money alone,”*Marroquín elaborated in an interview, “but with US agencies that allowed him access to this money.
He had direct relations with the CIA.”
Notably, Marroquín added, “the person who sold the most drugs to the CIA was Pablo Escobar.”
Where his first book primarily covered Escobar, the man as a father, Marroquín’s second — which has just been released in Argentina — delves into the kingpin’s “international ties of corruption in which my father had an active participation, among them with the American CIA,” he said in a recent interview.
Those government associates “were practically his partners,” which allowed Escobar to defy the law, and gave him nearly the same power as a government.
Predictably, this information is conveniently absent from media headlines in America.
If the CIA trafficking cocaine into the United States sounds like some tin foil conspiracy theory, think again. Their alleged role in the drug trade was exposed in 1996 in an explosive investigative series “Dark Alliance” by Gary Webb for the San Jose Mercury News.
The investigation, headed up by Webb revealed ties between the CIA, Nicaraguan contras and the crack cocaine trade ravaging African-American communities.
The investigation provoked massive protests and congressional hearings, as well as overt backlash from the mainstream media to discredit Webb’s reporting. However, decades later, officials would come forward to back Webb’s original investigation up.
Then-senator John Kerry even released a detailed report claiming that not only was there “considerable evidence” linking the Contra effort to trafficking of drugs and weapons — but that the U.S. government knew about it.
El Patron, as Escobar came to be known, amassed more wealth than almost any drug dealer in history — at one point raking in around $420 million a week in revenue — and reportedly supplied about 80 percent of the world’s cocaine.
Escobar landed on Forbes’ list of international billionaires for seven straight years, and — though the nature of the business makes acquiring solid numbers impossible — his estimated worth was around $30 billion.
Escobar and the Medellín cartel smuggled 15 tons of cocaine into the U.S. — every day — and left a trail of thousands of dead bodies to do so.
“It was a nine-hundred-mile run from the north coast of Colombia and was simply wide-open,” journalist Ioan Grillo wrote in the book, “El Narco: Inside Mexico’s Criminal Insurgency.”
“The Colombians and their American counterparts would airdrop loads of blow out to sea, from where it would be rushed ashore in speedboats, or even fly it right onto the Florida mainland and let it crash down in the countryside.”
If what Marroquín reveals in the new book is, indeed, true, it would mean the CIA played a major role in ensuring Americans had access to boundless quantities of cocaine — while the U.S. government sanctimoniously railed against drugs to promote the drug war.
In fact, as Marroquín keenly observes, drug prohibition makes for the best pro-drug propaganda — the nature of something being illegal naturally gives it greater appeal.

Those of you questioning the testing numbers for New People I got is by subtracting the total negatives residents ( 4,523,716 -4,497,495 = 26,221) than do the same with non-residents ( 12,609 -12,612 =-3) adding the New Cases+New Negative=Total New Tests for residents and non-residents ( 2,731 + 26,221=28,952 ) ( 64-3=61) then combine both testing numbers (28,952 +64=29,016 ) which excludes Inconclusive and "Awaiting testing" for the day. Calculate it is 2,795 /29,016 =9.63% If anyone doubts the positivity rate and testing numbers check CovidTrends and Johns Hopkins.
Adding this type of positivity rates due to a few people who think that the New Individual Positivity rate is misinformation the 9.63% since it's not including duplicates negatives. With Total Tested check the County Report because that the true testing number for Negatives which can be found in County report as stated " These counts include the number of people for whom the department received PCR or antigen laboratory results by day. This percent is the number of people who test positive for the first time divided by all the people tested that day, excluding people who have previously tested positive." So add 2,791 + 64,465 =67,256 2,791 / 67,256 =4.15% Calculation version its similar to just different positive numbers 2,795 + 64,465 = 67,260 2,795 /67,260 =4.16%.

2020.09.25 18:52 bustybogbanshee I'm removing my Kyleena IUD, I seriously don't think I can take it anymore

Overall, this my experience but I also wanted to know if anyone else had any similar side effects. It's been rough from start to finish.
I hate my periods. They put me out of commission for 3 days straight with pain, bloating, and so much blood. Just to get through the day I need to take at least 800mg of Naproxen minimum which is way too much to begin with. I also have zero desire to have children; I'm terrified of giving birth as well as passing down my mental illnesses. So overall, the reason I got it was so I could have some control of the period pain, no kids, and to not damage my kidneys with the amount of medication I take. For context, I have been on BC pills, both combined, and not combined, and it was not pleasant.
Now, before I even made the appointment, I had a lot of significant improvements in my life. I had quit smoking, I was starting to see a therapist and eventually got on medication (before IUD insertion), and I was starting to really take care of myself. This is some important context for later.
The initial appointment, they ran tests (pap, pregnancy test, checked for endometriosis, STD/STIs at my request, etc) and once I was clear, I went back in to get it done. Insertion honestly wasn't too bad. It felt like how I usually do when I have my period and I even took some pain meds before I went in, that helped quite a bit.
The first 6 months was absolute hell for me. The bleeding never stopped, it just ebbed and flowed. Some weeks were heavier than others and the pain was worse some days and non-existent others. I mean one of the main reasons why I got the IUD in the first place is so my periods wouldn't keep me in bed for 3 days. The provider told me that was normal for at least the first 6 months so I stayed with it, hesitantly though. It has now been 8+ months and I no longer bleed continuously, just on my period. However, I've been experiencing some side effects.
-Anytime I drink more than a regular cup of coffee a day, I start to cramp and bleed like I'm on period. I did test it by drinking only water until my period; once my period was over by a week at least, I drank a few cups of coffee one day and an energy drink on another day. The intense sharp pain and blood was pretty much the exact same for both days and once I stopped, the blood and the pain would stop.
-I also think my IUD is making me incredibly depressed. Now, I do have anxiety, depression, and ADHD but I have reacted very well to my medication for those illnesses, but ever since I got my IUD it's gotten worse and worse as time goes on. I even increased my depression medication and it hasn't made a dent in my depressive episode what so ever. I'm back smoking again to try to cope, and just have taken several steps back in my health and mental health. Yes, I am aware that smoking can cause issues while on birth control. I quit because of that but mostly because I hate smoking, I just made into a coping mechanism for my anxiety when I started.
-Sex also feels really weird. It's not very painful if it all, but I don't like the feeling of my partner inside me as it feels like my IUD is being "moved around".
-My periods are still incredibly painful (even more so on some days), the amount of blood is practically the same and it seems like they last longer than when I wasn't on BC.
The depression is kicking my as so I did research and I only found one blog post as it seems there is a large assumption that the IUD should only treat the affected area, not the body and research is not being done for it I guess? Harvard blog post on the study done in Denmark This blog states only a small percentage see an increase in depression but its still not enough for me to have a definitive answer as to whether my IUD is causing it or not..
I've looked everywhere where else and I can't find anything of value. So, I'm going to get it removed and see what my other options are. Has anyone else had experiences like this???

2020.09.25 00:49 Snarkstopus Share your Steam sales data with me!

I'm looking into doing some data analysis on sales data on Steam. The more data the better this will be. If you're interested in providing me with data from your published Steam game, send me a PM with the following information:
You can easily download your full sales data by clicking on "All History" on the home page of your Steamworks Sales and Activation page and then clicking on "View as .csv"
I will not be disclosing any individual data. The only people to look at this data would be me, or possibly some colleagues who work with data. Also, as a disclaimer: I am an indie games developer turned graduate student. This is mostly something that I think would be fun to work on and could possibly help out other developers if I find any interesting results.
In terms of research questions, I have a few in mind, but I would highly value any inputs for other potential questions to answer. Here's what I hope to answer:

EDIT: If it will be easier, you can also email me with the above information to: [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) or [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) (if it makes you feel more comfortable).

Character Name: Aelyx
Starting Title(s): Commander of the Eastwatch
Age: 27
Physical Description: https://imgur.com/a/OCFkkab
Starting Location: Eastwatch By The Sea
Attribute: gregarious
Skill Points: 20
Skills: Deception, leadership, diversion, naval warfare, Valyrian (Free)
Mastery: Orator
CHA MAR COM INT STE STA EDU MAG
10 6 0 0 4 0 0 0
Username: The Ordayne
Discord Username: Boss
Other Characters: Lyanna Tyrell, Damon Arryn
App and Personality Aelyx is every bit as proud and arrogant as one would expect from a wealthy family of the Free Cities. Well educated and cultured he tends to look down on the insular and comparatively barbaric cultures of Westeros seeing the majority of them as inferior to the Free Cities. Despite his high and mightiness, he is not above fulfilling his oaths and duties and works with a strong ethic to see the best done for whatever is at his command. Though that is not to say he is too proud for a little self-indulgence.
Aelyx has the silver Valyrian hair of his father with the sharp blue eyes of his Northern mother. His facial features are sharper than that of the average Westerosi but not as much as pure blooded Valyrians from the Free Cities owing to his Northern heritage. One place his Northern heritage shines is size, standing at an impressive 6 feet tall with a strong build he cuts an impressive stature.
Bio
Aelyx was born 356 A.C. to a prominent Pentoshi merchant and a Northern lover he met on his trade routes through White Harbor. Though his parents relationship was loving and polygamy hardly out of the norm for the Free Cities his birth out of wedlock and to a non Valyrian mother put him at a marked disadvantage early on compared to his fellow siblings.
Despite his Northern roots, Aelyx would spend the vast majority of his life in and around the trade cities. Though not a rich man, at least by comparison to the splendor of the local nobility, they were still a wealthy family able to afford estates in cities they frequented and a small trade fleet. Aelyx and his siblings would be privately tutored in the ways of finance and trade though Aelyx would never find particular enjoyment in the lessons much preferring the hands on work of the sea. Life was happy enough despite the odd look he got for his heritage, even despite the loss of reputation his birth meant for the family his father still cared for him as much as his other siblings. The only tragedy that struck these early years was the departure of his mother in his early childhood who found the crushing and foreign atmosphere of the Free Cities too hard on her health.
Even as he faltered in the matters of coins Aelyx would prove to be a capable sailor joining his father and legitimate siblings seeing the ports of the Free Cities and exploring Essos. Yet it wasn't the coin or wealth that inspired him to follow his family on these trips but the sense of adventure. The world was such an exciting place full of potential for exploration. He dreamed of one day having a ship of his own to sail across the world and have adventures of his own. Of course this would be a dream for a later day.
After years of begging he finally convinced his father to allow him to visit his country of birth; The Seven Kingdoms. He didn’t just want to stop by a single city but to actually experience the continent he never had a chance to know at birth. He had high hopes at first especially as they would first go to King's Landing. He would find his hopes quickly bashed however as the sheer poverty of the city became apparent. The dull looking Red Keep oversaw a city of endless slums with only a few manses of the nobility to break up the squalled skyline. The countryside could hardly be said to be better with its thatched huts and decaying towns. His greatest disappointment of all was the very land of his birth; the North. White Harbor was a good start, though not nearly as impressive as even the pettiest of Free Cities but all around it was blasted wastes of snow and mud. Perhaps the only true bright spot the entire trip was Dorne which he enjoyed quite a lot.
His journey to Westeros now over he came to appreciate the Free Cities even more and contributed to his ever-worsening opinion of those across the Narrow Seas. Despite the disappointment of it all his desire for adventure was not hampered by the previous disappointments, in fact he now hoped for even more.
Though he felt he was more a son of Pentos than Westeros he never felt quite the same within his own family. He wasn’t particularly close to any of his half-siblings besides his sister Aerea who was of the same age of him whom he would grow very, very close to
In his young adult years, Aelyx would give up on joining his father's company as another merchant and would instead take one of the ships in the fleet to become a sell sail. Naturally, when word reached him of the upcoming Targaryen conquest of Westeros he was quickly to pledge his sail in exchange for a lucrative bid. The war was long and bloody and more than once did he nearly get washed up on the shores as a smoldering wreck. It seemed his luck was destined to never run out, at least until it finally did. The last Targaryen was dead and the armies shattered and fleeing back to Essos. Of course, it was his luck that his own vessel was in repairs after a previous skirmish anchored in a captured port. Perhaps it was foolish but he stubbornly refused to abandon his vessel and retreat with the rest. Naturally, this would end in his capture. With the threat of imminent execution resting above his and his remaining crew's necks, he remembered the old stories of the Night’s Watch that his mother told him of as a boy. He swore that in exchange for his life he would take the path of many past traitors and criminals and take the black never to leave the Wall again. It was a bitter pill to swallow but it was preferable to an end right there.
If the rest of the Kingdoms were miserable the Wall was nothing short of a frozen hell. A massive sheet of frozen ice and impoverished castles all manned by the absolute scum of the planet. Was this really how he was to spend the rest of his days? Celibate and broke left to decay along with these castles? No, he would have to work his way through this, maybe even prepare to eventually run away, but for now he would have to make something of this hell.
It wasn’t long until Aelyx found himself the head of the Eastwatch, not that it was a hard position to land seeing how he was perhaps the only man on the entire damn walls beside his crew that had even been on a ship before… and was literate… Regardless it was a position that suited him well; he had a coast, ships, and, as he would find out, trade partners with the Wildlings. In time a successful operation was established to export furs to the Free Cities in exchange for luxury goods the men of the Watch hadn’t seen in a long time.

2020.09.24 19:54 yrjokallinen Starting a new cooperative organisation - join by filling a form, also need help with building the website

I’m starting an organisation that seeks to organise members within cooperatives to advocate for cooperation between cooperatives. This would especially be focused on organising members of big and old cooperatives to increase their cooperation with small and new ones. The name would be “Members For Cooperation Between Cooperatives” or “Members4Cooperation” in short.
The way to join the organisation is easy and free - just fill out a form where you tell which cooperatives you are a member of, and how you would be willing to participate. Have written an article about the topic of big and old supporting new and small cooperatives, which also describes some of the thinking behind Members4Cooperation. The organisation itself will be democratically governed.
It would seek to use the existing, imperfect and often greatly under-utilised democratic mechanisms, such as board elections and member resolutions to advocate for concrete proposals to increase cooperation with small and new cooperatives.
Would especially seek to start with member resolutions for more big and old cooperatives to donate a larger share of their charitable donations to incubator and accelerator programs for new and small cooperatives. For example the CCA Global Partners, a North American cooperative of small, independent carpet flooring businesses funded Start.Coop, an accelerator program that hands out 10,000$ to 8 cooperatives each year. Many of those cooperatives are worker owned. We could massively scale the number of similar accelerator and incubator programs with a tiny proportion of charitable donations of a small number of large cooperatives. For example, one of the campaigns would be to collect UK based Nationwide Building Society members to put forward a members resolution for the building society to donate 1% of its charitable donations, that would enough to give a £10,000 grant to 11 new cooperatives. The number of members signatures required to put forward a resolution is 500, and with 15 million members I think it’s doable - won’t go into details but have some ideas on how to start collecting signatures it that I would be excited to try out. I think starting with modest, zero-risk proposals like this would be good. The idea would be to gradually increase the proportion of charitable donations large cooperatives give to fund incubator and accelerator programs for new cooperatives, especially those in the tech sector.
Anyone from around the world could join and hopefully we could coordinate a common agenda pursued in big and old cooperatives across countries and industries. I have stood in the elections of S-Group coop (the largest Finnish retailer) advocating for a funding for an accelerator program similar to Start.Coop and giving preferential treatment to Tulos Osk, a Helsinki based worker owned cooperative staffing agency. Also stood in the elections for OP cooperative (the largest bank in the Finland) advocating for Alex Pentlands ideas for data cooperatives. Will continue to stand in their elections in the future with similar platform, and want the Members4Cooperation to be organise people around the world who are engaged in similar coop activism.
There are endless ways big and old cooperatives could increase cooperation with small and new ones - they could switch from Zoom to Meet.Coop, distributing to their members “coop coupons” that could be used in local and global cooperatives, etc.
A ground-up, member-led grassroots effort to advocate for this sort of cooperation would be something worth trying out.
Let me know if anyone here would be interested in getting involved, would for example need help building a simple website for the organisation.
I have not yet started to promote the organisation (want to get the website up ready), but have set up the membership form that can be filled in few minutes, Facebook and Loomio group.

Those of you questioning the testing numbers for New People I got is by subtracting the total negatives residents ( 4,473,862 - 4,452,882 = 20,980) than do the same with non-residents ( 12,597- 12,599 =-2) adding the New Cases+New Negative=Total New Tests for residents and non-residents ( 2,477 + 20,980=23,457 ) ( 64-2=62) then combine both testing numbers (23,457 +64=23,521 ) which excludes Inconclusive and "Awaiting testing" for the day. Calculate it is 2,541 /23,521 =10.80% If anyone doubts the positivity rate and testing numbers check CovidTrends and Johns Hopkins.
Adding this type of positivity rates due to a few people who think that the New Individual Positivity rate is misinformation the 10.80% since it's not including duplicates negatives. With Total Tested check the County Report because that the true testing number for Negatives which can be found in County report as stated " These counts include the number of people for whom the department received PCR or antigen laboratory results by day. This percent is the number of people who test positive for the first time divided by all the people tested that day, excluding people who have previously tested positive." So add 2,618 + 56,243 =58,861 2,618 / 58,861 =4.45% Calculation version its similar to just different positive numbers 2,541 + 56,243 = 58,784 2,541 /58,784 =4.32%.

2020.09.22 19:39 jar5624 Sunshine, Angel, and Rainbow Babies

Sunshine, Angel, and Rainbow Babies
A mother’s love for her children is often referred to as one of the strongest and purest types of love. It is said to be unmatched and felt within a woman’s bones, woven through her very being. It’s a love she never knew she possessed, but once found, can never escape. With that said, what happens when a mother loses her infant child to death via miscarriage or stillborn? What should she call her loss? After all, spouses that lose their partner are called widows. Children who lose their parents are called orphans. How can a person describe the emptiness left in the wake of a lost baby when the English language lacks recognition of its very existence? “Sunshine baby”, “angel baby”, and “rainbow baby” are terms that have been created to show recognition of an infant life that was lost to miscarriage or stillborn complications.
An explanation of each of these terms, as well as a window into their collective meaning, is described by [1]Juliet Rose Mallouk: “…the use of the term angel baby [is used] to describe the pregnancy that has been lost. The term sunshine baby, another instance of retrospective categorization, is a baby who was born to a mother before the angel baby, while a healthy child born after a miscarriage, stillbirth, or neonatal death (and the creation of the angel baby category) is known as a rainbow baby. Though I experience a kind of clash of ontologies in attempting to describe the phenomenon of the angel baby, I also recognize that the paradox that I find in the category is, in fact, central to its existence.” To clarify: when the pregnancy is lost, that lost child becomes an angel baby. This now makes a child born prior to the loss (assuming there are older siblings)- a sunshine baby, and a child born following the loss- a rainbow baby.
The unspoken sisterhood of many women, who have lost an infant child prematurely, gather in online communities where women can connect and talk about the struggles they have endured. In the absence of jargon for such an experience, these online groups of mothers have produced the terms of sunshine, angel, and rainbow baby that are now well-known among circles of moms. The exact timing of when this came to fruition is up for debate, but some believe it was around 2008 on one of the online posting boards. Not only does this new language display a mother’s mourning and remembrance for her lost child, but it also displays her celebration of her surviving children. How perfect a meaning?
Many cultures, over the course of history, have often suppressed and dismissed the emotions related to miscarriages and stillborn babies, regardless of its ever-looming existence. Whether society acknowledges this type of experience, it does not change the fact that a mother still has to deal with the psychological effects. The purpose buried underneath these new terms are the need for grievance. [2]Rebecca Jean Wright explains further: “Requisite for any grief journey is the task of assigning meaning to one’s loss. Making meaning of one’s loss does not then suddenly render the loss tolerable, acceptable or reasonable. No reason could ever be good enough or acceptable to satisfy the griever. Rather, the search for meaning relates to trying to make sense of one’s life after loss. By creating meaning, one is better able to gain some control over and find order in the chaos of grieving. Assigning meaning to a miscarriage is challenging, due in part to the ambiguous nature of miscarriage, and it is more than likely an iterative process that evolves over time.”
As this relates to folklore, you can see that a folk group has formed under the united cause of maternity, miscarriage, and a need for expression. The terms sunshine baby, angel baby, and rainbow baby are an artistic way of demonstrating this collective cause. These types of interactions (already built into society or created on a blog) that allow us to reflect on the meaning of our lives and allow us to make connections with the rest of the world are the most important of all.

2020.09.22 14:16 Nabisukey [Advice] What I Learned About Self-Control from Practicing Martial Arts & Studying Psychology

Don't pay attention to this, it's only a copyright thing. This story was initially published by Nabil Alouani on Medium
It all starts with a story.
The first punch landed on my jaw, the second grazed my right eye — I didn’t see either coming. I needed a few seconds to get rid of the blur in my mind and sight.
“Why was I here again? Oh yeah, that senior year guy insulted my mother in the locker room and I kept parotting his insults back to him — hah that was fun.
Screw the other guy though, where did he come from? Must’ve been from my right side since I was looking left.
Wait, wait, wait, where are the PE teachers when you need them? Shit, hold on! What about my broken arm? The cast seems intact — cool.
Why is this hurting more than it should? What the…are these…tears? ”
Time heals all wounds — or almost. First, my jaw and eye recovered, then my already-broken-before-the-fight-arm became functional again. My pride and self-esteem, however, needed special treatment. It wasn’t until I joined Kung-Fu and boxing clubs that I started to feel better. “Next time I won’t be the one crying,” I thought.
My long-awaited next street fight never happened — in fact, no other street fights ever did. At first, I thought it was an ‘unlucky’ coincidence, but coincidences don’t last fourteen years in a row. What happened is that practicing how to fight led me to stop fighting.
Here are the three lessons I've learned in the ring.

1 — Meet Your Inner Monster & Tame it

In a letter addressed to Kendig B. Cully, Carl Jung distilled two valuable lessons on how to deal with the dark side of human nature:
“Knowing your own darkness is the best method for dealing with the darknesses of other people.”
First, Jung indicated that when you explore your shadows), you become mindful of the human ability to cause harm to others and themselves — #1 awareness. Second, the founder of analytical psychology highlighted that acquiring such self-awareness is useful in helping others cope with their dark sides — #2 empathy.
In Jungian psychology, the shadows are mostly negative. They involve the unknown and least desirable aspects of one’s personality, such as fear, resentment, hate, and violence — martial arts allow you to handle the latter.
I was fourteen when I landed my first kick in a ring — beginners’ luck made it a precise, robust, and perfectly timed one. The moment my kick landed, my opponent’s eyes closed abruptly, then reopened, and stayed wide open as he fell to the ground. He stayed down, motionless, and kept staring at me. He was extremely shocked, and so was I.
“Why does it feel so good to hurt someone?”
I had just met an unknown part of me: one that enjoyed violence — hello shadow. Since then, I’ve had a weekly Rendez-Vous with my inner monster. I’ve been able to learn more about myself, not only by exchanging sparring blows but also by watching other club members fight. Not to mention the master’s contributions: stories, demonstrations, and assignments in and outside our Dojo.
Dojo’ is a Japanese term which literally means “place of the way.” For centuries, the word ‘Dojo’ has been used to refer to martial arts training places. Dojos are specially designed to contain violence and tame it. They provide a structure that transforms violent impulses into organized and supervised activities: group workouts, mock fights, and formal confrontations. Once martial artists understand and master their own violence, they become able to cope with it when it emerges from others.

How you can apply the first lesson

The first step to learning and practicing self-control during conflicts is to understand your capabilities and those of your counterparts. The fastest way to get a grip on your hidden dark impulses is to provoke them in a safe environment. Your personal Dojo can be your home or your phone. Your sparring partners can be your spouse, sibling, or friend. By experimenting with fake confrontation, you’ll comprehend how you can influence the course of action. Start small by discussing differences in music and food tastes, for instance. From there, you can escalate the training through role-play and remember, the more you sweat in practice, the less you bleed in combat.

2 — Activate Your Situational Awareness

In my humble Dojo, every rule had its exceptions. For example, no latecomers were accepted unless they had school beforehand. But one rule was unbreakable: “Greet the room as you enter.”
I’ve had my share of push-ups and sit-ups as punishment for skipping the greeting instruction. I thought it was a custom followed blindly, so I didn’t take it seriously — keyword being ‘thought.’ The small systematic gestures were a part of the training: they were intended to boost awareness and decision making.
In the ring, unreflected and intentional reactions can cost you valuable points and sometimes entire fights. That’s why Dojo masters emphasize vigilance. My former sensei introduced alertness training in every possible way: the exercises stretched from greeting the room all the way up to constraint-based mock fights where the trainees were restricted to use only their left arm and right leg while facing an unconstrained opponent.
Vigilance training fosters mindfulness, which allows fighters to actively notice moment by moment the evolution of their environment and themselves. From there, decisions about the next move or how to proceed with the next round start to emerge.
Being vigilant is also useful outside the ring. When you are alert to what’s happening around you and understand how certain thoughts, physical objects, events, and actions may affect outcomes, your decision-making becomes more pertinent.
Former UFC welterweight champion Matt Serra was about to leave a restaurant in Los Angeles when he noticed a drunk, aggressive individual who increasingly presented a threat to the safety of his family. After observing the violent guy and the surroundings — that didn’t seem to include upcoming help, — Serra decided to intervene. His fighting skills allowed him to safely neutralize the aggressor until the restaurant’s security team showed up.
There were no injuries. Serra went home, and the aggressor went to the police office — a happy ending.
By learning to be fully present during sensitive situations — such as aggressive behavior in a restaurant — you are more likely to integrate information analytically and thoroughly assess your position. As a result, you take action at the right moment and avoid putting yourself and people you care about in dangerous situations — say, for instance, a violent derailment in that same restaurant.

How you can apply the second lesson

Improving your situational awareness boils down to processing cues from your environment. You can practice through mental movies as well as real-life situations.
Try to recall the last nasty confrontation you had and observe what made it escalate. Triggers for undesired derailments can be as simple as a change in voice tone, an unexpected reaction, or an external event. When you learn to notice aggravation factors from past experiences, you can anticipate potential negative outcomes and prevent them in the future.
To practice situational awareness in real-life situations, observe your counterparts during the mock fights we spoke about in the first lesson. You can also be mindful of your counterparts’ behavior during small debates, such as deciding about the next step in a project or how to spend the weekend. Remember, the devil hides in the details.

3 — Use the Power of Your Sheathed Sword

In February 2007, Joe Rogan confronted Carlos Mencia on stage at the Comedy Store in Los Angeles and accused him of plagiarism and stealing jokes.
Mencia has been stealing jokes from other comedians for years. It has been an open secret in the comic industry, but no one dared to expose the theft — except Rogan. Rogan is best known for his worldly-top-performing podcast. But Rogan is also a martial artist who has been practicing different fighting styles since his early childhood.
Among other things, martial arts allow its practitioners to overcome the fear of confrontation. After wrestling with others, fighters develop confidence in their ability to control themselves and handle outside aggression. Even if it comes down to the worst-case scenario: physical confrontation, martial artists know they can still handle the situation — or at least they’re not afraid of trying. Therefore, martial artists dare to speak up and express themselves. Paradoxically, their acceptance of a possible harmful escalation allows them to prevent it from happening.
Rogan was able to publicly stand up against Mencia and his crowd, thanks to his self-mastery and courage. Rogan maintained his calm in front of an angry mob and spoke harsh truths despite the tense atmosphere. He showed that self-control is a sword that grants power even when sheathed.

How you can apply the third lesson

Once you are comfortable confronting your close peers, you can begin to widen your sphere of practice. Whether it’s at a meeting, a discussion with your neighbors, or at the bus station, you can step in to share your thoughts. Start with neutral topics to understand how interacting with an unpredictable audience works. Even if the audience demonstrates hostility, you can quickly retreat since the matter is neutral, and you have nothing to defend. With time and practice, you will learn how to intervene in controversial situations and express your opinion.
Of the three lessons we’ve seen together, this is the slowest to integrate. So take your time and remember that patience is a form of action.

Final Thoughts

There are only so many practices that explore conflicts the way martial arts do. After all, physical fights are the ultimate form conflicts can take. Our fear of violent escalations is usually what makes us avoid any potential clash. Unfortunately, sometimes, to clash is the only solution. The pay rise you expect at work, the argument you wish to tackle at home, and the inner fears you want to overcome have one thing in common: they all require confrontation.
What martial arts teach us is that most confrontations don’t require fists to be handled. All you need is awareness, self-control, and empathy. Fortunately, you don’t need to be in a ring to develop these skills. Like sparring partners preparing for an official fight, you can train with your peers before an official negotiation or argument.
Similar to what we saw across the three previous lessons, every oral mock-fight you have with a friend or spouse will teach you more about your monstrous inner impulses. According to Carl Jung, wrestling with your dark, angry side is how you master it. At the same time, you get to observe the reactions of your friend or spouse and ask them questions about how you make them feel. Over time, you’ll develop your situational awareness and respond at the right time — just like Serra did in the restaurant. Finally, when you acquire enough oral fighting knowledge and skills, you’ll speak up for yourself and even defend others the way Rogan did — probably not on stage, though.
If mock oral fights are too much for you, start by micro-confrontations in friendly environments to flex your conflict-handling muscles. Instead of saying “as you want” to your friend or spouse, pick a meal of your preference. Instead of whispering, “nevermind,” tell your colleague or parent what annoyed you. Instead of keeping your thoughts about this post hidden inside your head, hit that keyboard to let them out.
In short, practice fighting in safe, familiar environments so that you don’t have to fight in hostile ones.

2020.09.21 21:21 dadoonan Green Party Message for International Day of Peace: Support UN Call for Global Ceasefire, Repeal Authorization for Use of Military Force Act

https://preview.redd.it/9ldpti47xjo51.jpg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ab3d50ff4e901345c5333853361e9b823e5757ef
The Green Party observes the 39th anniversary of the United Nations International Day of Peace on September 21 by affirming support for the UN General Assembly Resolution 36/37 to “commit to peace above all difference.” The 1981 Resolution established the International Day of Peace with unanimous support.
Green Party leaders condemn the perpetual state of war launched, with bitter irony, on the 19th anniversary of the Day of Peace Resolution with the passage of the post-9/11 Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF). Green Leaders also emphasized the party’s demand for the repeal of the AUMF, which has even greater urgency with the global crises of COVID-19 and climate disruption.

Howie Hawkins, Green Party Presidential Nominee:
“It is shameful that in May the US was the sole UN Security Council veto of the proposed global ceasefire in order to cooperate to fight the COVID-19 pandemic. COVID-19 is a far greater threat to Americans than any force the US is fighting in its endless wars. The US ruling class would rather make war than heal the sick. So the US leads the world in deaths from COVID-19 at home and deaths in its foreign wars abroad. Those are terrible facts to recognize on the UN’s International Day of Peace."
Angela Walker, Green Party Nominee for Vice-President:
"If the United States is to change its status in the world from one of aggression and domination to one of peace and cooperation, we must repeal the Authorization for Use of Force Act."
Madelyn Hoffman, Green Party Candidate for US Senate (NJ), and Co-Chair of the Green Party’s Peace Action Committee (GPAX):
“The ramifications of war and preparation for war echo in every corner of human society in our country and abroad with devastating effects. It is time to end the horrible atrocities and unacceptable costs inflicted on humanity by the perpetuation of endless war.”
Lisa Savage, Green Party Candidate US Senate (ME):
“Our nation has become a military empire exporting violence and weaponry around the world while imposing austerity at home to pay for it. I call for an immediate end to US wars of aggression, occupations, and military bases in other people's countries. Let's bring the war dollars home and take care of our own urgent needs during this pandemic: Medicare for All universal single-payer improved and expanded health care, and a demilitarized Green New Deal to address the climate emergency that is our biggest security threat. As global citizens, let's not fight each other for resources but instead cooperate with one another to develop a response to the immediate threat of the COVID-19 virus.”
This year’s Peace Day theme is “Shaping Peace Together,” with the emphasis on working together globally to end the COVID-19 pandemic. Earlier this year, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres called for an immediate global ceasefire, saying, “End the sickness of war and fight the disease that is ravaging our world. . . That is what our human family needs . . .” His call for “solidarity across borders” is consistent with the Green Party’s belief that peace, environmental responsibility and health are intimately connected. Anyone who now denies we are one interdependent human species across borders on mother earth is not in tune to the unprecedented moment we share today.
According to the GPAX World Peace Action platform: “Despite the United Nations call for a global ceasefire during the Covid-19 world-wide pandemic, our government has instead deployed 20,000 troops to Europe to encircle Russia, and has sent warships to threaten Venezuela, Iran, and China. … Further, our country’s interventions in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East have left us mired in endless wars that have weakened our country’s economic vitality and decreased opportunities for our children.”
The Green Party’s Peace Action Committee has issued a Peace Pledge which they encourage all candidates for state and local office to sign.
“We have the opportunity while being forced to adapt to a pandemic to reflect on the very real opportunities to end our unsustainable way of life,” said Susan Lamont of the Green Party of California. “Let’s use this opportunity to rethink the ways in which we interact as people and as nations.” She added that the Green party of California platform “advocates a fundamental change in the way we socialize our citizens, structure our institutions, and relate to the planet and its people.” On this 2020 International Day of Peace, we remind people loudly and clearly that “peace is not just the absence of violence, it is a willingness to resolve conflict in a constructive manner with a spirit of good will and respect.” http://www.cagreens.org/platform/peace-non-violence
